QPR have splashed £1.5million on Portsmouth striker Tommy Smith.

It shows Neil Warnock's men mean to stay top of the Championship.

The Londoners beat off competition from Glasgow Rangers.

The Scottish champions had offered £300,000, which Pompey branded 'an absolute joke'.

Fratton Park chiefs insisted the player would only be sold if their £1.5m was met and QPR obliged.

Smith, 30, scored just one goal in 19 Premier League starts last season.

But QPR chief Warnock believes he will impress a division lower and can be the man to help secure top-flight football.

Smith was sold by Pompey to help cover a cash shortfall, after they failed to reach their £15m player sales target.

Administrator Andrew Andronikou had raised only £8.5m before the sales of Smith and Marc Wilson to Stoke.
